Tricia and I first met you, Beryl, in 1968, more than 50 years ago. Rapidly we forged bonds of friendship with you and Douglas and, as a foursome, did so many things together. There was the wonderful hospitality at Heather Lodge and then, after a spell in Woking, all those years in Hindringham where the Norfolk community absorbed you as their own. Together you contributed so much, always supporting the elderly and frail, catering at home, running local events, driving the less fortunate. Your hallmark was inexhaustible cheerfulness, based on positive thought and a glass that was always half full and getting fuller. To this partnership, Beryl, you provided the cement that led to stability with the charm and loving care that we knew so well. Always so well prepared, always sunny, always kind and considerate. Now I grieve for my wife, and for both my dear friends. For Douglas I had the opportunity to say something in public of my admiration and thanks, and now for Beryl it is my honour to write the same here. Beryl, we loved you and, for all of us here or before, you remain an inspiration for all that is good in society; something that we need so badly in this troubled world. Thank you for all that you have done and for the example of selfless service that you leave with us. And, lastly, may I say thank you to Celia, supported I know by Ashley and Lizzie, for handling these last painful months, including losing dear Mick so sadly, with the kindness and imagination that covid restrictions required. Everything that could be done, you did, and I hope that that will be a source of true satisfaction to you all.
